Plot synopsis
Leningrad in Combat is a unique film, made in the city under siege and dedicated to it, and also a unique historical document which captures the horrors of the Siege of Leningrad and the heroism of the city’s inhabitants.
The film was shot in Leningrad during the most difficult and terrifying period of the siege, the winter of 1941-1942. In the starving, slowing perishing city, the crew continued to film what was happening on the streets, fully aware of the historic significance that the reels would have. The film is certainly not a propaganda piece. It is in no way designed to awake a spirit of heroism or provoke great deeds. More accurately, the film is itself an act of heroism. Near death from hunger, cold, and the bombing, the crew continued to work in the besieged city and to do their duty: to capture on film the full horror of war.
The film was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1945.
Moreover, the reels were used as evidence for the prosecution during the Nuremberg Trials.
