Plot synopsis
Film story. Thirty-year-old Galina is a sculptor-restorer of the Catherine Palace in Peterhof. She's lonely. Life is limited by work and the apartment of her late mother, where the heroine lives alone with her younger student brother. Vera, her closest friend since college, the mother of a family with many children, insists that it’s time for Galina to get married. She introduces her friend to her husband’s friend Mitya. This is a confident, successful young man. He is a “candidate in five minutes,” drives his own car, builds a cooperative apartment, and swims in an ice hole. He likes smart, beautiful, independent Galina. It's getting closer to the wedding. But Galina doesn’t like Mitya’s practicality. She is absorbed in secret love for their mutual friend - the silent, slightly mysterious and, alas, married Andrei. She is not inspired by the example of Vera, who is mired in domestic life. Galina accidentally witnesses a date between Vera's husband and another woman at the airport and sees how tenderly his usually calm, ironic gaze glows. She decides to break up with Mitya and is left in the finale alone with her unrequited and selfless love.
