Plot synopsis
On March 29, 2012, thousands of anti-austerity protestors storm Barcelona’s streets. While businesses frantically board up their windows, a performance of Ludwig Minkus’ Don Quixote prophetically plays on undisturbed at the Opera House. Across town, legendary director Victor Kossakovsky dispatches 32 of his Masters of Creative Documentary students at the Pompeu Fabra University into the throngs with their cameras. Assembling extensive footage of collective action, its clashes, activists and riot police, Kossakovsky brilliantly sets the dramatic collage to perfectly timed excerpts of Minkus’ score—in effect, orchestrating an entirely original street theatre production. Complete with its own recurring cast, a narrative emerges around an old maestro of a protest veteran, a young woman who sacrifices herself for the cause, the villain police and even a masked avenger of the people. Pulsating with the urgency of protest and suppression, Demonstration transforms a day of disobedience into a stunning, crowd-sourced social ballet. Myrocia Watamaniuk
