Born in the family of a military engineer.
In 1955 graduated from Kiev’s Suvorov Military School where he took up writing poems and stories. In 1956-61 he studied at VGIK’s script-writing faculty. His first major work was the script to «Ilyich’s Outpost» filmed by Marlen Khutsiev. This led to him writing screenplays for such films as «Walking the Streets of Moscow», «I Am From Childhood», «You And Me» and others. «Long Happy Life» was Shpalikov’s first and only film as director.
In 1974 Gennadi Shpalikov committed suicide.
