Ivan Solovov est né le 29 octobre 1952 à Enguels dans la région de Saratov. A fait des études à la faculté de journalisme de l'Ecole Supérieure d'Etudes Politico-Militaires de Lvov. Il fait ensuite des études au VGIK (Institut national de la cinématographie). Il est diplômé scénariste et réalisateur en 1987. De 1978 à 1989 il travaille comme directeur artistique au sudio cimématographique du Ministère de la défense de l'URSS. Il a tourné plus de 40 films documentaires.
