Automne 1929. Lina qui appartient à la famille noble des Golitsyne se rend au rendez-vous avec son mari, Gueorgui Ossorguine, qui purge une peine de prison dans le camp des Solovki à destination spéciale. Lina ne sait pas qu'après son départ son mari sera fusillé.
Ossorguine a été condamné à la peine de mort après que, en tant que personne profondément croyante, il a donné les derniers sacrements à l'Archimandrite mourant pour qu'il reçoive la communion avant de mourir. Ossorguine a donné sa parole d'honneur d'officier russe aux autorités du camp de ne rien dire à sa femme du sort qui l'attend. C'est seulement à cette condition qu'on a accepté de le faire sortir de sa cellule pour un dernier rendez-vous avec Lina.
