Vanka works as a doorman in a hotel. He hates his wealthy clients but at the same time he dreams of living their luxurious life. In the meantime, he is forced to live in his car, bought on credit because he was evicted from his apartment for non-payment of rent. Adding to this complicated situation for the poor guy is the arrival of the debt collector Sergei Sergeevich, who has come to demand repayment of the monthly payments. To postpone the execution, Vanka pretends to be the son of a rich farmer who will easily settle the debt. But on the way to the farm, the traveling companions suffer a breakdown that turns out to be beneficial for Vanka. The somewhat shady mayor of a small provincial town and his crooked deputies mistake these unexpected guests from Moscow for representatives of the Investigative Committee. The ex-doorman receives a royal welcome and is offered a bribe in the form of the hand and heart of the mayor's daughter... unless he is unmasked.
