In 1929 he graduated from the Leningrad Faculty of Higher Arts. In 1930-31 he also worked as a graphic designer in the magazine "Vokryg sveta" and various publishing houses. From 1932 he started working for Leningrad's Rusfilm studio (future Lenfilm) as an animator
