Plot synopsis
This documentary takes us through the history of Murmansk, the biggest city north of the Arctic Circle. Through a wealth of historical film clips, we get to see the development from the foundation of the city in 1916 to the present. The film highlights the city's role in the exploration of the Arctic, Stalin’s visit in the 1930s and World War II, where German attacks made Murmansk the second worst bombed out city after Stalingrad.
Fortunately, the filmmakers have not left out the lives of «normal» people. Along with the featured experts, elderly Murmansk citizens eagerly share stories about the city they grew up in, giving a unique view of the everyday lives of the city’s inhabitants through history. A significant portion of the film deals with post-war developments, and the sunny images from the Murmansk of today are probably more colorful than you might have imagined.
