Plot synopsis
Film production of the eponymous play by Alexander Ostrovsky, performed at the Maly Theater in Leningrad
Young man from a poor family, Egor Dmitrievich Glumov, driven by ambition, wants a career. He flatters deftly, skillfully taking advantage of his clients' weaknesses, and secretly ridicules their stupidity and vulgarity in his journal. Gradually Glumov rubbed shoulders with the trust of his wealthy relative Nil Fedoseevich Mamaev and his wife Cleopatra Lvovna. The Mamaevs introduce Glumov to influential people Krutitsky and Gorodoulin. Having easily won their favor, Glumov finds himself in the house of a wealthy Moscow lady, Turusina, as a contender for his niece's hand. He is ready to do anything to accelerate this lucrative marriage ...
