The plot is based on the real story of the death of diplomatic courier Theodor Nette.
In the prologue of the film, the red commander Vasil is wounded at the hands of three White Guards in the Crimea. Whites are captured, but during the execution, which is led by the commissar of the Latvian riflemen Janis (Starygin), they manage to escape. Then the action continues after the civil war. Vasil is assigned to serve as a diplomatic courier. At first, he refuses: he, the hero-bearer of the order, is offered to become a postman! Having learned that diplomatic couriers are also dying from bourgeois bullets, Vasil nevertheless agrees. And in the commissariat of foreign affairs, the hero of Starygin is already serving as a diplomatic courier. Meanwhile, the enemies of the Soviet Union are on the alert. They hire three already familiar White Guards who are in dire need in Riga to steal the diplomatic post and kill the escorts. Vasil and Janis set off on the fatal flight to Latvia together ...
