1948. Nina Levitskaya, a former opera singer and mother of four children, knows nothing about the fate of her husband, who disappeared from sight almost a year ago. According to rumors, the father of the family, responsible worker Alexander should be somewhere in Moscow. Clouds are gathering around the family, and in order to avoid possible arrest, Nina urgently sells all her property, gathers her children and leaves Sverdlovsk for the capital.
Traveling by freight car with the remnants of household goods, a cow-feeder and a piano is fraught with daily danger. The road brings the heroes of the story together with many people: some are openly dangerous, others give warmth and faith in the future. The touching relationship between mother and children, mutual support, honesty and love make a favorable outcome of the journey possible.
