Russia at the beginning of the XX century. Peredonov, a gymnasium’s humble teacher, wants to get his promotion and leave for the capital. His cousin Varvara, who wants to marry him, knows about his desire and stealthily puts letters allergy from a countess offering him a high office in St. Petersburg. Peredonov believes. He is sure that everyone envies him though the society makes game of him. He fails to bear up quizzery and kills his friend who caught the eye.
