Plumber Tudyshkin lives poorly: no money, his wife and daughter nag him, and he has no health either. But he can always get hold of some vodka, at least a flask - that's what he's a plumber for. One day, Tudyshkin drank without eating, and said in his heart: "Lord, help me!" - and an unsightly man appeared in his small car. "Called God? Here I am!" God took the plumber as his assistant, and everything began to work out well and happily in the poor fellow's family. However, after God, the Devil appears. The Devil provokes Tudyshkin to all sorts of nasty things and in gratitude gives him everything that his wife and daughter ask for, and even with interest. So the unfortunate Tudyshkin rushes between God and the Devil, looking with hatred at his grumbling wife and insatiable daughter.
