Medieval Europe, during the Inquisition. The end of the 16th century. In Austria, Burgenland, a suburb of Vienna, there is a small town of Eseldorf (literally "donkey village" (a combination of the words German esel and German dorf)) (Non-existent in reality), which is under the almost complete subordination of the chairman of the spiritual tribunal, a strange young man visits, introducing himself to the boys who met him as Philip Traum - a traveler and magician.
Later, Traum confesses that he is Satan (or is Satan's nephew). The boys turn to him with requests, are delighted with each new trick of the mysterious stranger and, without fear of consequences, ask him to predict their fate. However, the predictions are not rosy, the consequences are not what they wanted. The boys once again beg Traum to change the future...
