Plot synopsis
The film is about Mikhail Glinka, the founder of Russian national music. In the village of Novospasskoe of Smolensk region, Glinka, being a child, plays the piano in a serfdom orchestra without his parents' permission. The tocsin of 1812 and the folk-songs imprinted in his memory forever. In Petersburg he meets Pushkin and other workers of culture. They encourage his desire to write Russian national music. After the slaughter of the Decembrists he goes abroad, but comes back with a firm resolution to create an opera about the heroic deed of Ivan Susanin, which is taken by progressive people of Russia as an event of great importance.
