Peregrine falcons and gyrfalcons are special birds. Falconry is a popular pastime among the wealthy, especially in the Middle East. Illegal hunting is one of the reasons for their declining population. Both peregrine falcons and gyrfalcons are listed in the Red Data Book of Russia. But not everyone sees the birds as commodities. Alexander Kostenko and his colleagues from the "Arctic Birds" project have been traveling to the restricted areas of the Tazovsky Peninsula in Yamal for many years. They observe birds, ring chicks, and install artificial nests.
