Plot synopsis
China, the middle of the XXth century. The main hero is Tatar man Nail Gabitov. His family emigrated to China from Kazan in the beginning of the XIX century. They were merchants and they led quite wealthy life. After Mao Zedong came to power, they took away all their possessions and sent them to Kazakhstan. Nail stays, he is given a job at the USSR embassy, which was friendly to China. But after the death of Stalin and revealing of terrorism the relationships between countries became hostile and all who worked at the embassy were arrested without trial. Nail Gabitov was in prison. He spent 18 years in solitary confinement in the most difficult conditions. He was released after the death of Mao. He gets acquainted with his future wife and they move to Australia. There is he taught English for free and given aid. After this he gets a job at a meat processing plant. His life is getting better, they have children. Now he is about 80 and lives in Australia with his family.
