Plot synopsis
This film, like the novel on which it is based – Aleksandr Puschkin’s “The Captain’s
Daughter“, published in 1836 – tells the story of the rebellious peasant
leader and self-appointed Tsar, Jemeljian Pugacˇëv as seen through the eyes
of an aristocratic sergeant of the guards, Pëtr Grinëv. On the way to the
fortress of Belogorsk, Grinëv gives a peasant his fur robe. Unbeknown to
him, this peasant is none other than the future rebel leader and selfappointed
‘Tsar’ Pugacˇëv. Once he arrives in Belogorsk, Grinëv meets the
family of the fortress commander, a patriarch named Mironov. He falls in

love with his daughter,Masha,which leads to a duel with Lieutenant shvabrin,
who is also in love with the same girl.Pugachov suddenly storms the fortress.
He executes Mironov, his wife and any officers who refuse to swear an oath
of allegiance to him. The treacherous Shvabrin escapes execution. Grinëv,
however, remains steadfast and refuses to swear fealty to the rebel leader.
The only reason he is only allowed to live is because Pugachov remembers
the present of the fur robe Grinëv once made to him. After celebrating their
victory with a feast, therefore,Pugacˇëv allows Grinëv to move on unharmed.
Masˇa, however, is obliged to stay put and, for this reason, Grinëv returns to
the fortress and manages to free her from the hands of both the rebels and
the faithless Sˇvabrin.Now an ordinary soldier, Grinëv, takes part in the battle
which finally crushes the peasant revolts. However, because Pugacˇëv once
spared his life, he is accused of being a traitor and sentenced to death. At
the last minute,Masˇa manages to obtain a pardon from Tsarina Catherine.
Shvabrin however, is executed together with Pugachov.
