The book is dedicated to the memory of the Soviet and Russian film director, screenwriter and teacher, People's Artist of the USSR, laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation Marlen Martynovich Khutsiev.
The book contains memories of the director from his family and friends, famous figures of culture and art - Igor Khutsiev, Yuri Bogomolov, Valery Todorovsky, Sergei Solovyov, Marianna Vertinskaya, Bella Akhmadulina, Karen Shakhnazarov, Naum Kleiman, Yevgeny Mironov, Yuri Norshteyn, Andrei Khrzhanovsky and others. A significant part of the book is taken up by Khutsiev's direct speech - excerpts from his public speeches, lectures, interviews, which clarify the master's views on the theory and practice of cinema and help to understand how the dominant principle of his work - a combination of "absolute documentary" and fiction - allowed him to achieve such an unexpected artistic result on the screen every time.
