Born in 1953 in Alma-Ata.
Graduated from the actors’ department (class of B. Babochkin) and directors’ department (class of S. Gerasimov) of the Film Institute VGIK. His first short “Beauty in Mourning”(diploma work based on Mukhtar Auezov’s early stories) received an award for directing at the student festival of VGIK.
Later his film “A Place on the Grey Triangular Hat” received the Golden Leopard Award at Locarno IFF.
His film “A Weak Heart” was presented at the competition of San Sebastian IFF and awarded a Special Jury Prize.
He has made a number of other successful films, including 20 documentaries.
