Leonid Yarmolnik was born on January 22, 1954 in the family of an officer in the city of Grekovo (Primorye region). In the 60s the family moved to Lvov (Lviv) in Western Ukraine, where Yarmolnik took classes at a theater studio. In 1976 he graduated from the Shchukin Theater School (Театральное училище имени Щукина) and began his career as a theater actor at Taganka under the direction of Yuri Lubimov. His first film roles went unnoticed, Yarmolnik became popular thanks to his participation in the television show Around Laughter (Вокруг смеха) in which he played the role of a "tobacco chicken" (a very famous Russian cuisine recipe). His first major film role was the role of the bandit Gnus in the film The Spinner by Vladimir Fokine. Since 1993 Yarmolnik has worked extensively for television. He also began to co-produce films, often in collaboration with the director and producer Valery Todorovsky.
