Aleksandr Kaïdanovski est né à Rostov sur le Don le 23 juillet 1946. En 1965 il sort diplômé de l’Ecole des Arts de Rostov, puis il étudie à l’Ecole de théâtre du MXAT (Théâtre des Arts de Moscou) puis à l’Ecole de théâtre Chtchoukine. A partir de 1969, Aleksandr Kaïdanovski travaille comme acteur dans différents théâtres. Il s’inscrit aux Cours supérieurs de formation des réalisateurs et scénaristes où il est l’élève d’Andreï Tarkovski. Il est diplômé en 1984.
Il commence sa carrière de réalisateur en 1985.
Il est membre du jury du festival de Cannes en 1994.
