1942 High mountain village in North Ossetia. All the men have gone to war, and their families fearfully await news from the front. When funerals begin to arrive at neighbors' houses and deprive people of all hope, two brothers persuade the postman to hide the “black papers” until the end of the war. Will the boys be able to overcome their grief or will their actions only delay their meeting with the inevitable?
