After a benefit performance and a noisy, exhausting banquet, the old comedian Svetlovidov falls asleep in his dressing room. Waking up at night in an empty theater, the actor acutely feels his loneliness, the years, and the bitterness of loss. He, who dreamed of playing Shakespeare's heroes all his life, became a jester, and here is the reward for his work and talent - everyone has forgotten about him, and the only person who treats him with sympathy is the homeless old prompter Nikita.
