The prince's son Igor Orlovsky is an adventurer and card sharper. Having inherited nothing but a title from his father, who squandered the family fortune, he makes a plan to get out of his unenviable situation: marry his beautiful sister Magda to the sickly son of a wealthy industrialist, Zheleznov, and marry his youngest daughter Zoya. But Igor's path is blocked by the millionaire's determined protégé, socialist engineer Nikolai Stratonov, with whom Magda falls in love. Meanwhile, revolutionary sentiments are growing at the plant.
