Plot synopsis
In a foreign city, biology professor Tsang succeeds in demonstrating that salamanders acquire the color of the environment in which they are found. This discovery goes against the religious belief in the immutability of living beings and displeases the zoology professor, the fascist priest Brzinski. The clergyman and his accomplices, the counterfeiting banker Petiskus and the student prince Karlstein, undertake a smear campaign against the scientist. They then tamper with his laboratory and have him expelled from the university for charlatanism.
Years have passed. Tsang's wife, who has become Karlstein's mistress, sells the counterfeit notes. She is arrested and imprisoned. To prevent her from talking, Brzinski visits her in prison and poisons her. Tsang, miserably settled in the working-class neighborhood, continues his research. Lacking oil to work, he steals a bottle and is surprised by the neighbors who insult him. Just as he is about to commit suicide, two Soviet researchers knock on his door and invite him to continue his experiments in their country.
