Plot synopsis
A woman who very much desired to have a little child went to an old witch who gave her a very special grain of barley and told her to plant it in a flowerpot.
Soon the young woman saw a large beautiful flower growing out of the ground, resembling a tulip, but still in bud.
"What a pretty flower!" said the woman, placing a kiss on these red and yellow leaves; and at the same moment the flower opened and inside, against the green background, sat a very small girl, slender and charming, no more than an inch high. So they called her Little Thumbelina.
She was given a well-varnished walnut shell for a cradle; violet leaves for a mattress; and a rose leaf for a blanket.
