The story is about one of the most interesting historical episodes of the first part of the 19th century when far-away California almost became a Russian province and the Pacific Ocean – its inland sea. One of the main characters of the story is a young enthusiastic midshipman of the Imperial Sea Forces – Dmitriy Zavalishin, a future Decembrist, an extraordinary and interesting personality. The story of the film is based on museum and archive materials, the memories of Zavalishin himself. The film shooting took place in Kronshtadt, St. Petersburg, Transbaykal and Russian America.
