Plot synopsis
1920. Southern Russia. The commander of a "prodotriad" (detachment tasked with finding supplies by force) returns to the city after his mission; in a fit of jealousy, he kills his brother and his beloved who has just given him a son. He is left alone with this newborn.
1942. Eastern region of Belarus. In the forest live an old man and his 12-year-old granddaughter. The commander of the Partisan detachment leaves a baby, his son, with this old man. He explains that his child is in too much danger with him and promises to take him back when he returns. The child does not stop screaming and crying. The girl tries to calm him down. Suddenly she experiences a new, unknown feeling: she is struck by maternal love. When the Partisans return, the girl grabs the baby and runs away with him into the forest.
1996. Northern Caucasus. Somewhere, at a disused railway crossing, lives a young girl from whom the war has taken everything: family, hope, reason. Next to her house hides a wounded soldier, worn out by the war. But these two will never know a new life.
2015. South-eastern Ukraine. A woman crosses the combat zone and returns home to find her children. But her village has been bombed and burned. A neighbor tells her that their children have died. And there, all the quarrels and past grudges seem absurd to these two women who have been deprived of everything by the war.
But perhaps everything could have been different if, in that distant year of 1920, the commander had not fired.
