Plot synopsis
At the heart of the story Ivan Lutoshin, a neurologist by profession and a failure in his life. He learns that he has an inoperable brain tumor and that he has six months to live. He decides to commit suicide: after getting drunk he drives onto a major road and stands in the middle of a lane. But the car manages to avoid him. The driver, Tumanov, is a police officer. When he learns of Lutoshin's problem, he offers him to participate in very dangerous operations to arrest bandits: if they kill him it will serve his plan.
