The protagonist of the film, nicknamed Navel, is a boy from the Bashkir village, whose childhood was in the 1920s. The film tells about the world of his childhood: about family life, village life, traditional Bashkir society of that era, about the fate of people whose lives fell on hard times.
Growing up, the main character goes through the Great Patriotic War. The film tells about the difficult path of the formation of his character and how the main character becomes a writer, choosing the path of serving his people.
