MUR investigator, Colonel Alexander Khlystov, receives an old photograph by mail: it shows Yesenin, just taken out of the noose. According to the rules, the investigator must give the case a legal course.
But Khlystov, making an exception for himself, decides to engage in private investigation and plunges headlong into studying Yesenin’s life and his mysterious death. During the investigation, Khlystov comes up with many versions of the mysterious circumstances of the poet’s death and it seems that he is already close to a solution.
