Biography

Early Years
• Family and Childhood:
Likhachyov was born into a family that valued education and culture. His father, Sergei Likhachyov, was an engineer, and his mother, Anna Likhachyova, was a teacher. From an early age, Dmitry showed an interest in literature and the arts.

• Education: In 1924, he entered the Philology Department of Petrograd University, where he studied Russian literature and language. At the university, he became acquainted with the works of scholars such as V. V. Rozanov and A. N. Veselovsky, which influenced his future academic career.

Repression and Labor Camps
• In 1928, Likhachyov was arrested on charges of participating in a counterrevolutionary circle. He was sentenced to five years and sent to labor camps, including the Solovki Islands. This experience was a severe trial, but it also helped shape his views on culture and society.

• In the camp, he continued to study literature and language, which allowed him to maintain his intellectual pursuit.

Academic Career
• After his release in 1933, Likhachyov returned to scholarly work. He worked at the Institute of Russian Literature (the Pushkin House) and at Leningrad University, where he became a professor.

• Main Research Areas: Likhachyov studied the history of Russian literature, the culture of Ancient Rus’, folklore, and questions of aesthetics. He examined the influence of religion on literature and culture and analyzed literary works in their historical context.

Major Works
Likhachyov wrote more than 40 books and around 500 scholarly articles. Some of his best-known works include:

• “Old Russian Literature”
— A study of the development of literature in Ancient Rus’, its genres, themes, and its influence on modern literature.

• “Russian Culture” — An exploration of key aspects of Russian culture, its traditions, and its impact on society.

• “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign” — A detailed analysis of this medieval text, its historical background, and its literary features.

Public Activities
• Likhachyov was an active advocate for the preservation of Russia’s cultural heritage. He was one of the initiators of various cultural and educational projects aimed at popularizing Russian literature and the arts.

• He was also engaged in issues of morality and education, emphasizing their importance for society. Likhachyov believed that culture and education form the foundation of civil society.

Awards and Recognition
• Likhachyov received numerous awards, including the title Hero of Socialist Labour, State Prizes of the USSR and Russia, as well as international honors.
