Plot synopsis
The action takes place in 1905. Mastakov is the director of a flourishing factory, he is in love with the widow Sofia Makrovana who feels similar feelings towards him. Mastakov is still quite young, handsome and rich and generous. He has built a school for the children of workers.
Everything was going very well, when an old man arrives accompanied by a young girl who is constantly hanging around Mastakov's property. With fear Mastakov recognizes his former prison comrade. They had run away together but only Mastakov had escaped the police. And the "old man" had done twelve more years. He had come to demand justice.
