When Leïla's grandmother, who raised her since birth, dies, the young girl falls ill with pneumonia and a severe form of depression. Her friend Oxana asks for help from an old painter who lives on the same floor as the girls. Valentin Pétrovitch and Oxana are upset because Leïla expects to die the day the last leaf falls from the maple tree in their yard. During a rainy night the painter decides to create a masterpiece that will give the young girl back her moral strength.
