Returning home after a card game, Lev Savvich Turmanov finds his wife, Polina Grigoryevna, caressing his friend, Fyodor Fyodorovich Degtyarev. The deceived husband overhears his wife placing the next letter for Degtyarev in a marble vase in the city garden. Turmanov decides to take revenge—he writes a letter to the local merchant Dulinov, demanding, threatening him with violence, that he put two hundred rubles in that very vase. Hoping that Degtyarev, when he takes out the ransom instead of a love note, will be arrested by the police, Turmanov comes to the garden to see how it will unfold…
