The Bodyguard, by the great film-maker Ali Khamraev, is one of the best of the ‘Red Westerns’ (sometimes called easterns or osterns). Like many of them, it depicts the Basmachi revolt: the uprising in Turkestan (now Uzbekistan and Tajikistan), led by Enver Pasha, against the colonial domination of Tsarist Russia and then the Soviet Union between 1916 and 1934.
