Plot synopsis
1919. The Civil War is underway. In the Ural steppes, the detachments of division commander Vasily Ivanovich Chapaev confront the White Guards. By order of the party, Commissar Furmanov is sent to Chapaev so that he can restore order among the disorganized mass of Red Army soldiers. Under Furmanov's influence, iron discipline is established in the detachments. At first, Chapaev is distrustful of Furmanov, but gradually, during the battles, the division commander and the commissar become comrades in arms.
