Graduated from the directing department of VGIK (1951, workshop of Igor Savchenko).
In 1941-1945 - a participant in the Great Patriotic War, was a pilot. He was shot down over Odessa. A woman hid Genrikh in the besieged city for a long time. He survived, but lost an eye, and spent his entire life with a black eye patch.
Since 1951 - director of the Kyiv, then Odessa film studios. Since 1962 - director of the Mosfilm film studio.
Author of a number of stories for the film magazine "Fitil".
After the film "Lebedev vs. Lebedev" Genrikh Gabai found himself completely out of work and in the early 70s he emigrated to Israel, and then to America. After that, Gabai's name disappeared from Soviet cinema completely.
Emigration did not bring him either wealth or success. He died forgotten by everyone in 2003.
