Leningrad, 1925. After her father's death, Antonina Starosselskaya has trouble finding work. A merchant navy sailor takes an interest in Antonina. They get married, but soon after the sailor is arrested for smuggling. A neighbor takes an interest in her. But one day Antonina meets some construction workers and the desire to become useful is born in her and she goes to a construction site...
