Provincial landowner Murzavetskaya, a prudish hiding under the guise of piety and virtue, wants to seize the wealth of the rich widow Kupavina. To do this, she decides to marry her dissolute and weak nephew to a young widow. But the landowner Berkutov, who came from the capital, destroys Murzavetskaya's plans. He enters into Kupavina's confidence and marries the young widow.
