A large metallurgical company, where Muscovite Roman Mukhin works, runs an orphanage in Khanty-Mansiysk. The management recommends that Roman take in a child from the shelter. Roman's wife, Elena, isn't opposed to it: she believes that another child (the couple have an older son, Oleg) would strengthen their marriage. The choice falls on 11-year-old Marta Chemesova. Marta refuses to leave Khanty-Mansiysk because her grandmother, who deeply loves her granddaughter, lives there. But, realizing that she can no longer take care of her herself, she gives the green light. Marta moves to Moscow. At first, all the protagonists of the story are overflowing with enthusiasm. However, despite a joint trip to India, where Marta has always dreamed of going, starting a real family proves more difficult than Elena and Roman would have imagined...
