Based on Chekhov's short story of the same name. Chief Conductor Stychkin invites matchmaker Lyubov Grigoryevna to his home. Over refreshments, he expounds on his views on marriage and lists the qualities he seeks in a future wife, including a comfortable income. Upon learning of the matchmaker's earnings, the chief conductor decides to propose.
