The action takes place in Azerbaijan in the years immediately preceding the October Revolution. A poor peasant named Kuli had boundless faith in Allah. He patiently endured the exploitation of the beys and khans. It seemed to him that life could not be any different.
Kuli's brother, Jafar, an oil field worker and underground activist, arrived in the village and began to agitate for revolution among the youth. Kuli was also present at one of the gatherings. His brother's bold and persuasive speeches sowed doubt in him about the validity of the existing order. To sort out his overwhelming emotions, he went to the mullah. Taking advantage of Kuli's fanatical faith in God, the mullah cleverly extracted the names of the participants in the underground meeting. A wave of arrests swept through the village. There wasn't a home where they didn't mourn the loss of their brother, husband, and son. Kuli was among those arrested.
