Maria lives in a small farm. Then comes the war, her husband goes to the front. The Germans occupy the neighboring village. Maria bakes bread for the partisans, whom she soon joins with her three sons. During a raid, her son Mykola is arrested and shot. Her daughter Nina prefers suicide to dishonor. Her youngest son falls a hero on the battlefield. Plunged into grief, Maria finds a baby next to a dead woman one day. She starts living again and later adopts three orphans whom she loves like her own children. Here she is a grandmother with her grandchildren. But time does not erase her sorrows. Years later, Maria finds the grave of the man she buried with her own hands in 1943
