A poor peasant Ivan Gorbov lives with his children Agasha and Pyotr in a village near Moscow. Zakhar, the son of the kulak Krivtsov, pursues Agasha. But Agasha likes the farmhand Andrei, who works for the elder Krivtsov. For his disobedience, Krivtsov drives Andrei away, and his poor farm is completely ruined. Andrei, Agasha, and Pyotr go to Moscow to earn money. Having become a worker, Andrei marries Agasha. Ahead lies the First World War, which will separate the heroes for a long time, revolution, famine, the loss of the youngest child and Agasha’s return to the village.
