Nina Ermakova, a country girl, goes to work in one of the largest factories in the country, where she quickly takes a job as a welder. She develops a new welding method, and decides to resume her studies. After graduating, she returns to her hometown to participate as an engineer in the construction of a gigantic industrial complex. During the Second World War, she heads the construction sector of the famous Uralmash factory in Yekaterinburg.
