Plot synopsis
Based on the story of the same name by I.S. Turgenev. Two friends, Punin and Baburin, settle in the estate of a rich landowner. Baburin is assigned to the estate office as a scribe, and the elderly Punin is assigned to be a tutor to the lady’s grandson. But very soon the friends' serene life collapses: having reproached the lady for unfairly offending the peasant, Baburin thereby incurs the wrath of the mistress - and the friends are thrown out of the estate. Several years pass in ordeals. They settle in Moscow. Muza, Baburin's ward, lives with them. It seems that they are happy again. Baburin announces his desire to marry Liza. However, Liza leaves the house and becomes the mistress of the rake Tarkhanov, known throughout the capital. The girl abandoned by her lover returns to Baburin and marries him. Old man Punin dies. In the last minutes of his life, he warmly thanks Baburin for all the good he has done for him.
A screen adaptation of the first half of the story.
