Civil war. The efforts of the young Soviet republic are aimed at fighting the intervention and counterrevolution. There is hunger and devastation in the cities. In one of the villages, a wealthy peasant evades the delivery of grain, disregarding the hardships experienced by the city's workers. One day, the peasant's daughter reads him a legend about the stingy and cruel Bishop Gatton. The bishop's cellars and granaries contained huge reserves of grain, but he refused to help the starving, for which he suffered a well-deserved punishment - an invasion of rats and mice destroyed all his wealth.
